Looks like Avatar 2 will take a little while longer before it makes a run at the same box-office gold as its predecessor.
Unfortunately, the film is “not happening” in 2018, says director/producer James Cameron, marking another of many delays in its rollout.
The sequel (or sequels, as Avatar will evidently be turned into a film franchise) have been hotly anticipated. Avatar is the all-time global box-office champion in absolute dollars, having drawn $2.788B after its 2009 debut. (It’s No. 2 on the domestic chart, with $760.5M to Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $936.7M.)
One factor in setting release dates: Cameron is working on four sequels simultaneously. “It’s an epic undertaking,” Cameron says.
He’s making the films with Twentieth Century Fox (NYSE: FOX) meanwhile, Walt Disney NYSE:DIS) is still set to open its Pandora theme park land based on the film at Walt Disney World in May.
The impact to revenues is unclear at this time
